Today we’ll discover which are the best essential oils to overcome the hangover after a long party, that upon waking up reminds us of the excesses we’ve committed.

Essential oils help overcome the hangover, that general malaise caused by not drinking alcohol in moderation. Headache, gastric discomfort, nausea and dehydration, among others, are the most common hangover symptoms.

Ethanol, the main ingredient in alcohol, is responsible for having a hangover after drinking alcoholic beverages, which adds that the hangover worsens with age. Although there is no miracle cure, but if you had a beer or an extra glass, we do have some remedies. These essential oils can help you overcome the hangover and help the body to recover from excess alcohol. Here’s how aromatherapy can help you.

Essential Oils for the Hangover

Natural essential oils are extracted from different parts of the plants (flowers, leaves, bark, roots, fruits…) and used to relieve numerous discomforts. Considering the properties of plants, these are the most recommended essential oils to mitigate hangover symptoms. And, of course, don’t forget to increase your water intake – it’s the best remedy of all.

Rosemary essential oil

Rosemary is used for hangovers, especially to combat headaches since this plant favors the blood circulation of the brain. Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) has analgesic, digestive and tonic properties. An extra benefit is that rosemary counteracts the effects of free radicals produced by excessive alcohol consumption. Add a drop of rosemary essential oil in hot water.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint essential oil helps relieve headache and digestive problems caused by alcohol intake. It is a good remedy against nausea. It can be used in an aromatherapy burner or you can add a few drops to the hot bath.

Adding a few drops of peppermint essential oil on a cloth or cold compress and applying on the forehead helps to relieve the headache. Another option is to add a few drops in hot water and take a relaxing bath, because peppermint is also soothing.

Grapefruit essential oil

The aroma of the essential oil of grapefruit, extracted from the grapefruit peel, provides energy and helps improve concentration upon waking with a hangover. Apply a few drops of grapefruit essential oil on warm cloth and breathe deeply several times.

Lavender essential oil

Lavender is especially recognized for its relaxing effect as it’s an effective remedy to relieve the general discomfort of the hangover. Applying lavender spray on the pillow promotes relaxation and helps you sleep. One of the benefits of a nap is to recover from the lack of sleep caused by alcohol.

How to use them?

To eliminate alcohol intoxication, you can also use essential oils of grapefruit, jasmine, lavender, lemon, juniper, rosemary, sandalwood and fennel.

Mix:

  • 5 drops of fennel
  • 3 drops of lavender
  • 5 drops of sandalwood
  • 10 drops of lemon

Dilute 8 drops of this mixture in a small amount of milk (or another medium) and pour in warm (37°C) bathwater. Dilute 4 drops of the mixture in 1 teaspoon of fatty oil and, after taking a bath, rub into the skin over the liver, back and neck.

To relieve a hangover syndrome, prepare the following mixture:

  • 10 drops of grapefruit
  • 7 drops of rosemary
  • 4 fennels
  • 3 junipers

Dilute 2 drops of this mixture in a small amount of honey and dissolve in a glass of water or tea (drink in sips).

With nausea and headache after alcohol abuse, essential oils of juniper, peppermint, rosemary, thyme and fennel help.

To prevent alcoholism and relieve cravings for alcohol, it is recommended to use grapefruit, lime and ginger essential oils or regularly add ginger root to food.
